I actually took this apart months ago because of a post on LUGNET someone left saying they couldn't get their Micro Scout back together properly. During my DV cam frenzy, I found the body bag (aka "Ziplock bag") it's been laying around in and began filming.
Opening up your Micro Scout voids the warranty and you may end up ruining it. Use this information at your own risk. I'm not responsible if you screw your property up.
Disassembly
Remove the battery cover and batteries to expose all four screws to be removed as shown below.

Hold the body together and turn upright. Remove the top of the body and the opaque window to reveal the insides:

The board is soldered to the battery clips and the motor to hold everything in place. Unsolder the two battery connections and two motor connections.

Gently remove the circuit board from the motor brushplate leads and battery terminals. While the board is removed, finish removing excess solder from the holes so everything can be put back together easier.

Remove the motor assembly from the lower half of the body. Examine the motor assembly closely and make note of the leads protruding along the side of the motor body where the biggest "ears" are.

The brushplate is external to the motor. Look closely at the center of the brushplate and you'll see the brushes touching the commontator. They are delicate and easy to bend out of shape, so be careful and pay attention to how they sit along the shaft. The white plastic plate has a few tabs that hold it snugly in place. Gently pry the tabs up just enough to pull the brushplate away from the motor.

The Micro Scout is re-assembled in exact reverse order. I slowly put the brushplate back on using a jewelers screwdriver to set the brushes, one brush half at a time. From being stored and jostled around for so long, my brushes bent out of position slightly, so I had to bend them back towards the center slightly (so they would press firmly on the commontator shaft). When re-soldering the board, be sure to use an appropriate amount of solder.
When the Micro Scout is fully assembled, run Program 1. If the motor doesn't spin clockwise, then you'll need to disassemble the whole thing and put the brushplate back on properly.
Run Program 2. The motor should run clockwise for a few seconds, then counter-clockwise for a few seconds and repeat. If it doesn't, then good luck figuring out what you did to ruin it!

Each brush is "forked" with two tines. It may be hard to see that in these pictures. The drawing on the left represents the brush alignment on the commontator as viewed from above with the brushplate leads pointing downwards. |
