The auto-launch feature can be disabled by removing the registry entry that causes RIS to be launched on startup. Yes, the file the key refers to could be deleted or renamed, but we only resort to hack-jobs if the proper fix fails or doesn't exist.

The key name is "RIS2PostReboot" and is stored under [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]. If you are familiar with editing the registry on Windows PC's, then you should be able to figure out what to do.

Since most people aren't familiar with the registry, I've created a reg file that removes the key and spares them from the eye-bleeding techno-babble. If, for some insane reason, someone wishes to put the key back, download the undo reg file. The same files work for Windows 95, 98, Me, 2000, and XP.

For those of you who are curious, reg files can be viewed using notepad (right-hand click on the file after extracting it and chose "Open With". Select "Notepad" from the list.) The contents of the reg files are as follows:
